Rose Rita James, LCSW, MSW, MA is a Chicago-based trauma therapist, somatic experiencing practitioner, multi-disciplinary artist, and generational ritualist whose work bridges neuroscience, ancestral wisdom, and poetic storytelling. She is the author of Tears Are Holy Water: Somatic Wisdom & Rituals for Feeling and Aliveness, a poetic and neuroscience-informed guide to reclaiming aliveness in the body after trauma.
Over the past decade, she has trained extensively in EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Systemic Family Constellations, Reiki, and Human Development and Learning while guiding individuals through the sacred unfolding of nervous system repair. She specializes in working with clients with PTSD, developmental trauma, and attachment-related challenges. Her unique approach blends evidence-based modalities with ancestral and spiritual practices when welcomed by clients.
Rita’s journey to this work is as rich and varied as her client base. Before becoming a therapist, she served as a natural resource police officer, special education teacher, licensed cosmetologist, and even worked in film production. This wide-ranging experience gives her a deep empathy for life transitions, emotional complexity, and the diverse rhythms of human resilience.
At the heart of her work is a mission: to help others experience the vibrant aliveness that trauma and relational disconnection so often obscure. She believes healing is not about becoming someone new—but remembering, reverently and creatively, who you were before you had to adapt to survive.
Rita is passionate about working with Millennials and Gen Z, two generations she believes hold transformative power, and also holds deep kinship with her own Gen X peers. Whether delivering in online or in person psychotherapy, she supports clients through identity development, creative expression, coping with anxiety and depression, navigating new parenthood, trauma recovery, and reclaiming voice and agency.
When she’s not writing or working with clients, Rita is painting or sculpting in her office-studio, parading in the streets, dancing with her loved ones in her kitchen, or traveling the Earth—soaking in the awe and wonder of each vista—with her family by her side.
